Abstract:

In ecological restoration in semi-arid regions, both shrub mixed planting and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) inoculation are important measures for enhancing vegetation rehabilitation, yet their synergistic mechanisms remain unclear. To investigate the interactive effects of shrub mixed planting patterns and AMF inoculation on the rhizosphere microhabitat and seedling growth in semi-arid regions, this study selected Clematis fruticosa (G), Prunus mongolica (M), and Spiraea pubescens (T) as experimental species. Six mixed planting patterns (G-M-T, M-G-T, G-T-M, T-G-M, M-T-G, T-M-G) and two AMF treatments (±AMF) were established, resulting in 12 treatment combinations. Soil microbial biomass, glomalin-related soil protein, available nutrients, and seedling morphological and nutrient indicators were measured. Data were systematically analyzed using two-way ANOVA, multiple linear regression, and partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM). The results demonstrated that: (1) Mixed planting patterns and AMF inoculation exhibited synergistic effects on the soil microhabitat. Under the M-G-T pattern, soil microbial biomass phosphorus increased by 79.3% with inoculation compared to no inoculation. In the G-M-T and M-T-G patterns, easily extractable glomalin-related soil protein significantly increased under inoculation. (2) The root morphology of the seedlings exhibited significant plasticity. Under the G-M-T and M-G-T patterns, the specific root length and specific surface area increased by 386.8% and 440.0% respectively with inoculation compared to no inoculation. (3) Soil available phosphorus and dissolved organic carbon were identified as key drivers of root architecture and seedling quality. Path analysis further revealed that AMF acts as a "system regulator", indirectly promoting seedling growth by improving the microbial community and microhabitat.
